First Things First

Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing

Life can get busy — even when we’re trying to do good things. It’s easy to be pulled in a dozen directions at once, juggling responsibilities, work, family, and even church activities. But if we aren’t careful, we can miss the very heart of what we were made for: drawing near to Jesus.

At Renew Church, we believe in keeping the main thing the main thing — and that “main thing” is Jesus Himself.

In Luke 10:38–42, we see a story that speaks directly to this:

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’
‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”

Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong by serving — but her heart was distracted. She became so focused on the work for Jesus that she missed simply being with Him. Mary, on the other hand, sat at His feet, hanging on every word.

The truth is, even good things can become distractions if they pull us away from Jesus.

In a world that constantly demands our attention, we must intentionally choose the better part — the simple, powerful practice of sitting at His feet. Spending time in His Word. Worshiping Him in spirit and truth. Listening for His voice above all the noise.

As we move forward into this new season at Renew Church, let’s be a people who keep first things first. Let’s not allow busyness, stress, or even religious activity to crowd out our relationship with Christ. Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus — the One who is worth it all.

Come and join us this Sunday in Willard. Let’s rediscover the joy of keeping the main thing the main thing — together.
